Sometime later, lips numb from kissing, we realised the car had slowed and turned onto what felt like a bumpy track. Nervously, I wondered if we were already at the rendezvous if so that had been the quickest thirty minutes of my life. Who knew just kissing could be quite so time-consuming?
When the car cruised to a halt a few minutes later, I held my breath as we waited to see what would happen. We heard the engine cut out, then came the sound of a car door opening and closing, followed by footsteps on a rough, twig covered ground. Seconds later, the boot was thrown open, and we were ordered by Sammy to get out of the car.
I climbed out first and was followed by Finn who grabbed my hand and kept me close to his side as Sammy barked at us to walk towards Mark. Barely ten feet away, Mark clocked the fact the Finn was holding my hand and frowned before sending me a quizzical look. I smiled at him apprehensively but didn’t acknowledge his questioning stare. What was happening between Finn and me was none of his business, and anyway, why make a big deal out of something that was going to be over before it even got started?
We came to a stop a few feet from Mark when it dawned on me, we were in the middle of a clearing surrounded by trees. I recalled the stories of bodies hidden in the woods and I was anxious all over again. I wondered, and not for the first time if we were going to get out of this alive.
“You okay?” Mark asked.
I nodded and took a step closer to him, but Sammy held an arm out in front of me and stopped me before I could get any nearer.
“Where’s the stuff,” Sammy asked.
Mark sneered at Sammy before pointing to the boot of his car and Sammy, who had just unholstered the gun and was aiming it at my side, indicated that Mark should open the lid.
Holding his hands out flat towards Sammy, and without making any sudden movements, Mark popped the lid of the boot open.
After taking a couple of steps forward, Sammy stopped suddenly before turning back to face Mark.
“Did you see anything suspicious?” he asked. “Was anyone hanging around? Did anyone follow you?”
“I never saw a soul,” Mark answered confidently. “It was straightforward. I went in, the security guard was asleep, just like you said he would be. I picked up the jewellery, the case wasn’t even locked. There was nothing untoward, nobody challenged me. It’s fine, it all went to plan.”
“But what about the CCTV?” I questioned.
“Balaclava,” Mark explained with a shrug.
Sammy nodded slowly before taking a step closer to the boot and stopping again.
“Open it,” he said to Mark.
Mark moved to the boot and sticking his hands inside, unzipped the bag.
“Okay,” Sammy said and with a flick of the hand that wasn’t holding the gun, indicated that Mark should pass him the holdall.
